Thunderbird Filelink

Email servers may reject email with very large file attachments; how large varies by server. However, files as small as 1MB may be rejected, although today this is unlikely. One solution to this limitation is via the Filelink feature in the Thunderbird email client. To use Thunderbird Filelink you must use a supported online storage service. Free storage services currently supported:

• Ubuntu One

• YouSendIt

• SpiderOak (planned for future releases)

When you write a new email and attach a large file Thunderbird will detect that the file is a big one and will suggest you use Filelink instead of sending an email that will probably be rejected. If you elect to use Filelink your attachment in the message will be replaced with a link. The message recipient just clicks the link to download the attachment stored by the online storage service. The link in your email looks like this:

Filelink

I tested this functionality with a 17MB file and found it to work quite well. While the upload portion of the process was slow, download was fast. It appeared that some aggressive compression was used on the file during upload.

On a Side Note

The registration process for Ubuntu One was annoying; including a very hard to read CAPTCHA and a confirmation email with a confirmation code to complete registration.
